Benefits for Home Nursing Care

Home nursing care can be claimed, without a degree of nursing care – but also with a degree of nursing care. Unfortunately, many patients still pay for home nursing services themselves or unnecessarily set them off against the level of care and thus miss out on valuable additional services.

Whoever has to make use of the services of a nursing service for home care during an illness or after a stay in hospital in order to receive temporary or long-term medical care, receives these services under certain conditions prescribed by the doctor.

But also, for example, the putting on and taking off of compression stockings is a domestic nursing service which is provided on prescription. You can read more about which services are covered by home nursing in the list below. You can find out more about this here by putting on and taking off compression stockings, which are available on prescription from a doctor.

However, if you have a nursing degree and are cared for by a nursing service, you do not necessarily have to offset home nursing care against the nursing degree. It is possible to receive benefits from home nursing AND at the same time benefits from the degree of care, as the following example shows. In this article I have compiled everything you need to know about outpatient nursing services.

How much does home nursing cost?

The costs for home nursing care are covered by the health insurance as a benefit in kind – with the exception of your own contribution/co-payment. The nursing service bills the health insurance directly, so that you do not have to pay in advance. You will then receive a statement of your own contribution from the health insurance company.

In order for the health insurance company to cover the costs, the nursing service must have concluded a care contract with the nursing insurance company.

Tip: Under certain circumstances, the health insurance fund may not be able to provide a suitable nursing staff for home nursing (HKP), in which case the insured person can procure a force for himself. The health insurance company will then cover the costs in an appropriate amount. The same also applies if the patient does not accept the nurse (for example, in the case of dementia or mental illness). However, this must be agreed with the health insurance company.

How high is the co-payment for domestic nursing care?

Home nursing care is provided on prescription and requires an additional payment (similar to physiotherapy or massages, for example). Of course, those who are exempted from the co-payment obligation do not have to pay anything. Read my article “Saving money with the exemption from co-payment for medicines and aids”.

The following co-payments therefore arise for insured persons who have reached the age of 18 and who are not (or not yet) exempt from the co-payment:

10 euros must be paid for each medical prescription and
10 % of the costs for a maximum of 28 days per year.
How high your co-payments are, you can calculate with my free co-payment calculator.

What services does home nursing include?

Home nursing covers the following areas:

Basic care
treatment care
Domestic care
Basic care includes body care, nutrition and mobility

In the area of body care, for example, this includes the following tasks: Help with showering and bathing, help with washing the body, hair and face, dental care and support for emptying the bladder and intestines, continence training. By the way, you will find tips on how to avoid accidents when showering and bathing people in need of care as well as some recommendable aids that make body care easier in my section “Advice on aids” – see article Avoiding accidents when showering people in need of care.

The Nutrition section deals with helping people to eat, i.e. preparing meals bite-sized and helping them to eat.

The mobility section covers, among other things, help with putting on and taking off clothes, getting up and going to bed, moving from a wheelchair to bed or a chair, walking and moving around in the home (also with aids such as a wheelchair or a rollator), climbing stairs, etc.

TIP: Depending on the need for care, appropriate care underwear such as overalls or incontinence underwear can make care much easier. Detailed information can be found here: Active overalls, nursing overalls & Co. can make nursing easier.

Treatment care services

Treatment care is provided by specialists of the nursing service. The aim is for the nursing service to provide medical assistance that does not have to be provided by the doctor. This includes, for example, decubitus care, dressing changes, operation and monitoring of a ventilator, blood pressure measurement, blood sugar measurement and much more. The services in the area of treatment care are very extensive.

Services of domestic care

Especially people living alone cannot provide for themselves in the case of a serious illness. This is often the reason why you have to stay longer in hospital or have to go to a nursing home for short-term care. Then the domestic care services of the home nursing care come into play.

Domestic care includes preparing food, setting and clearing the table, washing up, shopping, disposing of rubbish, obtaining medicines, cleaning the apartment, changing laundry, washing and ironing laundry.
